Exploring the Myth of Work-Life Balance

There’s a lot of talk about work-life balance, especially among business owners and CEOs. Good luck with that. Who do you know that is capable of the perfect balance between life and work? Key word: PERFECT.

Let’s be honest: that’s not how life works. No magic formula ensures every day, week, or even year is perfectly balanced. And that’s okay.

Rather than chasing balance, I believe in work-life harmony—an ebb and flow where work and life complement each other instead of competing.

Aiming for Harmony, Not Balance

One of the biggest misconceptions about work-life balance is that you achieve and maintain it. The idea of work-life balance makes it sound like every day should be split 50/50 — part work, part life. But life comes in seasons, not percentages.

Some seasons? Work demands more.

Other seasons? Family needs you more.

I’ve seen this firsthand with entrepreneurs and executives who believe they must be available 24/7. But here’s the truth: you must rest to be your best. You can’t burn the candle at both ends without getting burned.

That’s why it’s better to achieve work-life harmony. Harmony allows room for seasons to change, and for your responsibilities to ebb and flow.

Cultivating an “Owner Mindset” to Work Smarter

Work and life aren’t separate for CEOs and business leaders—they’re deeply intertwined. That’s why I encourage leaders to develop an owner mindset, even if they aren’t the owner. When you own a business, there’s no safety net; the success or failure of your company rests on your shoulders. But that doesn’t mean sacrificing your well-being.

An owner mindset means taking full responsibility—not just for your business but also for your personal effectiveness. It means recognizing that working smarter, not harder, is the real game-changer. The best leaders aren’t the ones who grind the longest hours; they’re the ones who know when to step back, recharge, and operate at their highest capacity. If you’re not leading yourself well, you won’t lead others well either.

The Cost of Work-Life Chaos

The consequences will catch up if you don’t actively manage the rhythm between work and life. I’ve worked with young, energetic leaders in their 30s and 40s — sharp, driven, successful — and burned out. Why? Because what they called a season became a lifestyle.

They told themselves: “Just one more project. One more quarter. Then I’ll rest.” But that pause never comes — until their health, relationships, or team start to crumble.

A leader’s lack of work-life harmony doesn’t just affect them—it impacts their team and their family. Leaders set the tone. And if you’re always overwhelmed, always “on,” guess what? Your team learns that same unsustainable rhythm. Unhealthy leaders can create unhealthy teams. When it comes to family, remember this, you are only as good of a leader as you are at home. Don’t run your family time on fumes and scraps. No one, at the end of their life wishes they had spent more time at the office!

Redefining What Success Looks Like

Success isn’t just about profit margins or career milestones. True success comes from blending success and significance—achieving great things while making a meaningful impact.

That requires intentionality. It requires leaders to define success not just in terms of work but also in terms of relationships, health, and fulfillment.

So instead of chasing work-life balance, ask yourself: Am I living in harmony? Am I making decisions that serve both my business and my family’s well-being?… If not, it’s time to reassess, adjust, and create a new rhythm that leads to long-term success and significance!
