Time to quit?

Time to quit?

A good portion of life is spent in a regular routine. We eat sleep, work and repeat. Not much thought is given to the everyday rhythms of life. It is what it is. We get by with little incident.

But then there are those days when circumstances, accidents, opportunities or happenings erupt outside our control. The regular pattern of life as ordinary is interrupted with something extraordinary. A memorable moment is hatched and an unusual experience is born.

Surprises have a way of sneaking up on us. Some are good and some are tragic. Things are moving along with predictability and then all of a sudden, boom! Life happens. We are shook from our nook and the world is suddenly splashing cold water in our faces.

They said there would be days like these. Days when the control we thought we had is lost in the reality that we are simply along for the ride in many ways. The sun rises and the sun sets. Another 24 hours passes and we live through yet another average day.

Sure, we get to pick and choose a few treats from the candy store of life at times but in large part, we have little to say about where the world is heading and where we find ourselves in the bigger scheme of things. One thing leads to another and eventually we wake up where we are.

We can continue to float like a dead fish down a lazy river or we can quit accepting the so called cards that we have been dealt, reshuffle the deck and play a different hand. Folding isn’t an option.

We may not ultimately be in control but we certainly can influence the outcome. Doing nothing changes nothing. It’s time to we quit the blame game and start doing what we can do to move the needles on the dashboard of life.

Life will allow us to accommodate passivity but it also has a way of responding to action when we take responsibility for ourselves. It comes down to what we accept and expect.

We can allow the status quo to prevail and little will change or we can decide to quit accepting less than the best and begin expecting things to get better.

Proverbs 23:4 says, “Be wise enough to know when to quit.”  What are we holding onto? What have we come to accept? Has comfort crept in and convinced us that we are powerless? Have we given up just about the time breakthrough is breaking out?

Sometimes we quit too soon but chances are, we don’t quit soon enough. We hang onto the past, bad habits, poor self esteem and the way things have always been assuming and expecting things will somehow change if we just shift life into neutral and let the engine idle.

Is it time to quit? Is it time to let go of attitudes, mindsets and ways of thinking that are holding us back?

The potential we dream of is possible. We can in fact play a role in the life we’ve been given.

Yes, much has been decided and we have been placed in a time and space not of our choosing, but we can make a difference in the ultimate outcome if we decide to quit accepting and start expecting things to change as we move into action and live responsibly.
