I once had the chance to speak with a group of inmates going through a leadership program. Out of curiosity, I asked them to describe leadership in one word. Without hesitation, they all responded with the same answer: influence. That moment confirmed what I’ve always believed—walls, roles, or résumés don’t limit leadership. When I asked those inmates what leadership meant, they didn’t talk about power or control. They talked about influence. Why? Because they’d seen it firsthand. Behind bars, influence can build unity or fuel destruction. It can encourage growth or keep people stuck.
