When was the last time you had dinner with the scum of the earth?
Who do you consider to be the scum of the earth today?
Apparently my dinner parties look a lot different than those Jesus attended.
It’s tough to get serious about it but I think it’s time I check my guest list. How about you?
Consider what it might have been like to attend dinner with Levi:
Jesus left the town, he saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Levi got up, left everything, and followed him.
Later, Levi held a banquet in his home with Jesus as the guest of honor. Many of Levi’s fellow tax collectors and other guests also ate with them.
But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus’ disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with such scum?”
Jesus answered them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. Luke 5:27-31
Can you imagine the conversation between Levi and Jesus on the day of the party?
LEVI: Hey Jesus, guess who is coming to dinner?
JESUS: Some of my buds from the synagogue?
LEVI: Nope, the scum of the earth!
JESUS: Cool, I was hoping we would have some fun and love on some folks tonight!
LEVI: Would you mind picking up some ice on your way?
JESUS: Sorry, bro. I only do the water into wine thing. Ice this time of year in Jerusalem really would be a miracle.
So, what do you say? What if we stepped out of our comfort zone and had lunch or coffee with some scum this week? Chances are they probably think we are scum too so the opportunity for good things to happen are even higher!
See you at lunch fellow sinner!
