Are you cruddy or a buddy?

When a friend is hurting, what kind of friend are you? Are you cruddy or a buddy? Do you comfort and console or condemn and criticize? Job’s friends meant well but when their consultation turned to condemnation they lost their influence. Often the best response to another person’s suffering is to say nothing. Sitting in silence with the ministry of presence speaks volumes. Next time you discover a friend hurting, show up and shut up. Rather than explain, help your friend endure. Provide empathy before explanation. Be patience with their pain. Genuine friendship includes attentive, compassionate presence in times of sorrow and loss.
